Doubt: A Parable is just that... a parable. Doubt is a story meant to teach us a lesson. Due to the themes discussed in Doubt, many people jump to the conclusion that this lesson is anti-Catholic in nature. But I would rather conclude (from what Shanley states in the preface and from our team's collaborative work on this production) that Doubt is really about "Courtroom Culture" or what we now call: "Cancel Culture".
Change is a scary thing, as things change, people change, people adopt new and different styles, and the world starts to look like a twisted version of what they are it starts to change into what it will become. With change comes the feeling of being threatened, and from that derives dissent and... Doubt.
Our production of Doubt, A Parable is set in Sheol, the biblically accurate afterlife. Within Sheol rest two sides: paradise and the burning place, separated by an insurmountable chasm. Doubt takes place in that chasm... at least- metaphorically, the characters of Doubt are trudging through the chasm of Sheol as they traverse the parable of the play. They are confronted by their own actions, beliefs, biases, and, of course, this leads to the conclusion of the play... Doubt. We hope you enjoy.
